Description, Responsibilities, and Qualifications

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) invites applications for a teaching assistant (TA) position in the Korean language program for Spring 2026. The SP26 TA position is a 33% appointment for the Spring 2026 semester only.

  • Applicants must be a graduate student in a master’s program under LAS or in PhD programs at UIUC. Students pursuing a master’s degree in other colleges are welcome to apply but priorities will be given to those in LAS or in PhD programs.
  • Applicants must have native or near native level fluency in Korean and native or near native English proficiency.
  • All teaching assistants whose native language is not English need to provide a qualifying score of the TOEFL iBT, iELTS, or the English Proficiency Interview (EPI) to be considered for a teaching assistantship in Spring 2026. 

English Proficiency Requirement for Teaching Assistants | The Graduate College at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

  • Experience in teaching in higher education is highly desirable. 

The position will begin January 1, 2026 and extend to May 15, 2026. The applicant must be available prior to the beginning of the Spring terms for the orientation and class preparation. 

Duties and responsibilities of a Korean TA in Spring 2026 are as follows:

  • Teach a Korean language course (4 days a week)
  • Grade assignments, quizzes, and exams
  • Assist with the in-person UIUC Korean placement/proficiency test on Friday, January 16, 2026
  • Attend bi-weekly TA meetings
  • Attend the Campus TA orientation in January (for first-time TA)

Compensation

33% appointment for Spring 2026, with stipend and tuition waiver per Graduate College guidelines.
